I used to prefere the American accent, too, in my first years of learning English. And it just sucked when my English teacher tried to make us pronounce "dance" in the British English way, because to me the American English pronounciation sounded better at that time. I guess it was because I was used to it. Most Popsongs were in AE, so why the hell did we have to learn it differently?
Now I've changed my mind and I'm glad my English teacher speaks Oxford English - though the English speaking is sometimes pretty rare in our lessons..
But my teacher is a real genious when it comes to languages. He speaks German (of course

), English, French and Italian (nearly) perfect and he can do lots of German and some English slangs. And the best yet: He can speak a bit of Erse (=Gälisch), some kind of celtic language. Sounds truly amacing.
